System requirement

OPSA services are made available online.

Learners therefore need the following to access the content:

  • Live access to the internet, via a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or even a smart phone (fine for occasional access, but not for continuous daily use).
  • Dependable internet connectivity is important.
  • Access to a printer – monochrome is adequate
  • For uploading content, a scanner is handy, but the camera function on a phone can also be used.

Overview of OPSA daily Lesson Content
General notes:

  • The lesson content on the OPSA platform is fully CAPS aligned and to a large extent synchronised with the syllabus for government schools.
  • The core content is extracted from the same text books that are used in many schools.
  • This is done to ensure a measure of continuity especially for learners who are using the platform on a temporary basis with the aim to return to mainstream schooling.
  • OPSA adds to the core content additional information, graphic material, as well as music and video clips with stories or concept explanations.
  • In many lessons we have also built in interactive activities for learners to complete online in the session. An example of these are the daily mental mathematics activities.

You can choose between English or Afrikaans teaching medium.

Foundation Phase

Grade R – 120 lessons covering these subjects

  • Mathematics
  • English Home Language or Afrikaans Huistaal
  • Life Skills, including these sub-areas:
o Beginning Knowledge and Social Welfare
o Creative Art, Music and Drama
    o Physical Education

Lesson content for Grade R:

  • Focuses on building solid understanding of essential foundational concepts for Mathematics and Language.
  • Includes regular activities in almost every lesson to encourage physical movement, gross motor, fine motor, balance, hand and eye coordination.
  • Includes resources to print at home on a standard printer, using standard printing paper. (Black ink is sufficient) However, in most cases there are also suggestions for alternatives if printing is not possible.
  • No special books are required - Only standard stationery like crayons, colouring pencils, scissors, glue, ruler
  • Encourage the home tutor to view the entire home area as a dynamic learning environment and to creatively use/reuse items that are readily available in most households in the learning process:
o Using cutlery, old bottle caps, clothes pegs, buttons, pebbles, sticks, etc. in lessons.
o Old magazines, newspapers, printed flyers from local supermarkets and shops.
o Making play dough with easy and affordable recipes.
  • Includes stories, videos and music clips, as well as some interactive online activities.

VERY IMPORTANT:

  • On Grade R level fully independent self-study is not yet possible and a learner needs the guidance of a parent/tutor to unlock the full value of the lesson content.
  • However, learners will definitely find value in (re)visiting certain content like stories, videos and music independently – learners always have access to past lesson content throughout the 12-month access period they are signed up for.
