OPSA's Unique Assessment Solution

(CAPS aligned, term-to-term and grade progression)

OPSA Assessments (Grades R–9)

OPSA provides online CAPS-aligned assessments for home-educated learners, completed under parent/guardian supervision and assessed by SACE-registered teachers. Assessments are available in Afrikaans or English and are structured in line with home education assessment requirements in the BELA Act framework.

1. How the Assessments Work

Our assessment system includes two assessment formats. Depending on the grade and subject, learners complete a combination of quizzes and written tasks.

  1. Online Quizzes (Auto-marked)

    • Format: The learner answers questions online.

    • Marking: The system marks the quiz automatically.

    • Results: Results are available immediately after submission.

    • Review: Parents can review answers to identify mistakes and areas for improvement.

    • Important: Quizzes are typically available only once and are subject to a time limit.

  2. Assignments (Teacher-marked)

    • Format: The learner completes work by hand (typed assignments are not accepted). This may include writing tasks, practical activities, and reading tasks where applicable.

    • Submission: Parents upload completed work (and where required, an audio/video recording) to the platform for marking.

    • Marking & feedback: SACE-registered teachers mark the work and provide feedback.

2. Duration and Scheduling

There is no fixed time or set duration for completing assessments. Home-educating families determine their own programme and schedule, and learners complete assessments when they are ready (under parent/guardian supervision).

3. Subjects Included (Including Coding & Robotics)

Assessments include all CAPS subjects for the selected grade, including Coding & Robotics. Because Coding & Robotics is a newer subject, you may choose to:

  • Include Coding & Robotics in the assessment (it will appear on the report), or

  • Exclude Coding & Robotics (it will not appear on the report).

Coding & Robotics can also be assessed separately. If assessed separately, it is treated as a stand-alone assessment and will not appear on the main report.

4. Reporting and Documentation

Once all marks have been captured and teacher marking is completed, an official report is issued by a SACE-registered teacher. This report is CAPS-aligned and suitable as an independent assessment record for home education purposes.

You will receive:

  • Report: issued after marking is complete

  • Merit certificate: issued if the learner achieves an average of 80% or more

  • Promotion letter: issued after the final assessment of the year (Term 4 or End-of-Phase, depending on the grade), signed by a SACE-registered teacher

5. Assessment Options and Fees

OPSA offers three assessment options, depending on how you want to assess your child’s progress:
